prepare to have your mind torn asunder! Put a shotgun to your nirvana,
do away with your pearl jam, the real talent has stepped back up to the
stage, front and center.
Today marks the day of Alice in Chains
first single release in over a decade (14 years roughly). While Staley,
the voice behind the Chains maybe long gone, the core group of fellows
is still around using the same name, which I believe is the way it
should be, but that is a discussion for another day.
The song has been publicly released. Just head on over to AliceInChains.com
, fill out the 3-4 lines of information, and they will send you the new
song via e-mail. It literally arrived in my mail box immediately and
free in MP3 format, popped it onto my itunes, easy pie.

First
Impression? I'm not sure how to feel about this, it surely will take a
bit getting used to DuVall's voice, though he surely has exceeded my
expectations. He does not try to imitate Staley, but the same creepy
vibe is still there, and hell, this guy really is not all bad of a
Vocalist, though he surely does not display his full range on this mid
paced song.
The Guitar work? Just as solid and sludgy as always, Cantrell never fails to impress.
Second
Listen: I really am digging this, all the elements that made AiC, well,
AIC are still firmly in tact. This song is great. I look forward to the
album and i'm truly warming up to DuVall's presence.
A couple of uptempo crushers? Check.
A few droning mid-tempo head trips? Check.
A couple of radio friendly super catchy tunes? Check.
A pair of straight up white-knuckle mind-f*%# sonic roller coaster rides? Check.
Anyone
who can't appreciate this, is not a true Alice in Chains fan, this is
new, original, Alice in Chains, there has never been an album that
sounded remotely or cohesively similar to the last. Yet they all had
that same vibe and touch that made it uniquely the chains. This is no
exception, excellence in musical format.
Layne maybe dead, but
the soul of AiC lives on! The chains still have a bright future ahead
of them. Layne is surely smiling down upon them on this fateful day,
and God Am, he must be impressed.
